Future SDTS Demonstration Planning
- Discussion of a future demonstration of the SDTS transfer capabilities available in commercial GIS. Group decides scope of demonstration; appropriate forum, i.e. session at next big GIS convention or demo during vendor exhibition; which vendors want to participate, how to prepare for the demo; etc. David Hastings, moderator.Conformance Testing
An explanation of the Sponsoring Organization Model for USGS recognition of Spatial Data Transfer Standard's Topological Vector Profile certification system. The roles of the USGS, Certificate Issuing Organizations, Testing Laboratories, and Test Method Executive Control Committee will be reviewed.Raster Profile Issues
- Discussion of this new profile and the strategy to converge standards (profile includes an extension to SDTS to all Basic Image Interchange File for image data). Technical Issues: Is the profile technically complete or too broad or too narrow? What are the difficulties in implementing? Compression requirements are handled in a unique way -- what do you think? Conformance testing -- how should this be done? Strategy Issues: What are the advantages/disadvantages of the strategy to converge? What should the relationship be between formal standards and adhoc defacto raster standards? Dave Greenlee, moderator.Transportation Data Issues
- Can just one transportation profile work for all parts of the transportation community? What are the requirements? Can the transportation data models for GDF, ITS areas, LRS, enterprise GIS-T, commercial GIS's (and perhaps DIGEST/VPF) be supported within one SDTS profile? How well can the older TNP and TVP, and the future Object Profile, be used for transportation data? What is the future relationship among SDTS, OGC, and transportation? Charles Hickman, moderator. Additional post-workshop comments by Charles Hickman, USGSSDTS Profiles
- What has happened to date with profiles. Groups will identify problems/issues and possible solutions. Philosophy; too many, too few? Impacts on software development? Richard Hogan, moderator.Next Generation SDTS
- Discussion of areas where SDTS needs to be modernized: transactions, attribute model, features, object model, etc. Group defines priorities, other areas of enhancements, participants to enhance the standard; how to work on next version of SDTS (ANSI, FGDC, or an ad-hoc working group); when SDTS should defer to other standards; what is life expectancy of the SDTS-type of standard; etc. David Arctur, moderator. Additional post-workshop comments by David Arctur Also as a result of this breakout session there was a Follow-On Activity Roster which includes three areas of interest in future development needs, along with individuals who are interested in participating in these activities.|
