SDTS Workshop Results - Management Session
Speaker: Charley Hickman, Rolla, Missouri, USGS
Topic: SDTS Profiles, Overview of existing and planned profiles to SDTS, and explanation of the purpose of profiles.

Mr. Hickman provided an explanation of the purpose of profiles to SDTS, some guidelines on how to develop a profile, and a brief overview of 12 profiles that exist or have been suggested.
A profile is a subset of SDTS, related to just one data model (e.g., raster data), that allows more reasonable implementation of translators and tools. There are a number of recommended steps for proposing, developing, and approving a profile to help ensure that the number of profiles will remain reasonably low. Approved or supported profiles include the Topological Vector Profile, the Raster Profile with BIIF Extensions, and the Point Profile used for NOAA control data. Other profiles that are in development or under serious discussion include the CADD Profile, a more complete transportation profile, a nontopological vector profile for desktop GIS support, a DIGEST or VPF profile sponsored by DOD-NIMA, and the Object-Based Profile that
is being defined with representatives from the OpenGIS activity. Much more information on all
these profile efforts is available by following the "profiles" link from the SDTS web page.
