Topic: MICRODEM: Experiences with the SDTS DEM profile

Professor Peter Guth, Department of Oceanography, US Naval Academy, talked about his
experiences with the SDTS DEM Profile as he was writing MICRODEM, a freeware program he
wrote for the Army field personal to use in doing topological analysis. The 1997 version of his
program called TerraBase II, is written in Delphi3 for Windows 95 and NT and can be
downloaded from his web page at ftp://ftp.nadn.navy.mil/pub/oceano/microdem/ or
ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/gis/ (alternate site which also has some data sets available). Some of the
reasons for writing MICRODEM were to do geologic analysis, fault geomorphology in the Great
Basin, land form classification and DEM analysis. Included in the presentation was a description
of data formats such as DEM, SDTS, and USGS ASCII files and how successful MICRODEM
was in dealing with them including the number of files and the file sizes associated with the
formats. His ftp site also has the data sets available that he used in this development.
